GameMats.Com is thrilled to announce the upcoming launch of PRINTERRAIN, our line of cool 3D printable wargame terrain and accessories!
If you've been following us on social media, you've probably noticed an increased number posts showing sneak peaks of items we've been working on over the last few months. It's taken us a bit longer than we initially thought to get to the point where we're happy with the range, look, and feel of the models we want to offer. We've also spent a significant amount of time test printing and fine tuning the digital models. You’ll be happy to know they print reliably and have no, or need very little support materials for the print to turn out beautifully.
We are launching models from a variety of genres so that regardless of which tabletop wargames you play, you should be able to find something cool to add to your battlefield. As we move forward with PRINTERRAIN, we’ll expand our range to cover most tabletop gaming genres, including, Fantasy, SciFi, Dystopian, Historicals and more. As with our game mats, we love community feedback. If you have an idea for a model or feel that a particular genre is underserved in terms of 3D printable models please do let us know!
We know you probably have lots of questions, so we've put together a FAQ based on the questions we're getting via our social media. Please read through the FAQ, but do feel free to ask us questions via our email “firstname.lastname@example.org” or via our social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram).
PRINTERRAIN 3D PRINTABLE WARGAME TERRAIN & ACCESSORIES FAQ
When does PRINTERRAIN, launch?
We expect to launch the 1st week of October 2017
Are you doing a Kickstarter or crowdfunding this?
No. We’ll launch with a variety of models and then plan to have new releases every 7-10 days. No huge buy in required, no paying for stuff you don't want to get the stuff you really want. Just buy what you like when you need it.
What will be available at launch?
We’ll have a variety of models from the sci-fi and fantasy genres available at launch. To begin with we're concentrating on models that work well with our current range of game mats. This means models suitable for games like Warhammer 40,000, Frostgrave, Infinity, Age of Sigmar, Kings of War, Necromunda, the upcoming Star Wars Legion game, and more. We’ll expand from there and also continue to produce models that match the theme of our upcoming game mats.
Will you help me get started in 3D printing?
Yes! Alongside our PRINTERRAIN launch we’ll regularly drop helpful content with 3D printer recommendations, reviews, how-to’s, tools, tips and more.
I don't have a 3D printer, can I still use these files?
Absolutely! Our first article in our how-to series will provide you with information on how to get your files printed if you don't own a 3D printer.
Can I buy your models already printed?
We plan to roll out a “get it printed” service a few weeks after PrinTerrain launches. Some, but not all, of our models will be available via this service.
How much does it cost?
Each STL file will be individually priced. We’ll also have themed packs of STL’s. You can buy models individually, or as a package with a built in discount. We will eventually roll out a subscription service where you can get all of our new releases every month at a great discount.
Can I print and sell your models?
When you purchase STL files from us you are licensed to use them for personal use. While we don't mind if you print models for your friends and gaming clubs, you cannot go into business printing and selling PRINTERRAIN models.
Do you have a model for X?
Maybe, but if we don't have what you're looking for yet, reach out to us and let us know what you're looking for.
What size 3D printer do I need?
While some of our Scatter terrain will print on smaller printers, many of our models require at least a 200mm X 200mm X 180mm build volume. (7.9” X 7.9” X 7.1”).
What kind of 3D printer do I need?
At launch our models are designed to be printed on an FDM style 3D printer (FDM stands for Fused Deposition Modeling. This style of printer uses a spool of “plastic wire” referred to as filament. The filament is melted and pushed through an extruder where it is deposited one layer at a time as it prints the model according to the instructions you provided it via an STL file.
In future months, as the technology becomes more reliable we will start to design miniatures that can be printed with a high resolution resin 3D printer. There are some exciting developments happening with this style of 3D printing that is making it more affordable and accessible. While we don't quite feel it's ready for prime time right now, we do think it will be in the next few months.
What kind of plastic do I need to print your models?
There are a variety of plastics used in FDM 3D printing. We recommend you print wargames terrain & accessories with PLA. PLA is a starch based plastic made from corn, taro root or sugar cane depending on which region of the world it’s manufactured in. PLA is mostly odorless, or has a syrupy smell when heated. PLA is easy to use and forgiving for a 3D printing novice and it's also bio degradable in the same way that plastic grocery bags are.
Can you recommend a 3D printer for me?
We've used (and continue to use for testing purposes) a variety of different makes and models of 3D printers. Our favorite FDM 3D printer is the Original Prusa I3 Mk2S. We’ll have more to say about this and lots of other 3D printers in future updates.
